Miami, FL — A Florida State Trooper and a female driver were both hospitalized after a violent encounter early Saturday morning along State Road 836 in Miami-Dade County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers responded around 5:30 a.m. on March 7 to reports of a reckless driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of State Road 836 near Northwest 107 Avenue.
A trooper located the vehicle stopped in the grassy center median and made contact with a female driver. A young child was also inside the vehicle.
While the trooper was speaking with the woman, authorities said she suddenly brandished a knife and stabbed the trooper multiple times in the head, neck and shoulder.
The trooper then discharged his firearm, striking the woman.
Both the trooper and the suspect were transported to HCA Kendall Trauma for treatment.
Investigators later determined the woman had active warrants for child neglect, child abuse and fleeing and eluding law enforcement.
The child who was in the vehicle has been taken into the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Officials said the woman will be booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail once she is released from the hospital.
The incident remains under active criminal investigation.
As is standard in officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent review of the trooper’s use of force.
