Jacksonville, FL — A 19-month-old child was safely reunited with their mother after a suspect stole a running vehicle from a parking lot earlier this year, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities released details and video related to the incident that occurred on January 8, 2026.
District 4 Patrol officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle with a child inside after the mother briefly left the car running while she went into a nearby store.
Investigators say the suspect entered the vehicle and drove away with the child still inside.
Officers quickly began working to identify the suspect and track down the stolen vehicle.
Police located the vehicle less than 20 minutes later, but the child was no longer inside.
Witnesses had called 911 after seeing the suspect remove the child from the vehicle shortly after the theft.
Officers soon located the baby at a nearby store and safely reunited the child with their mother.
Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Micah Simmons.
Simmons is now facing charges that include battery and grand theft auto.
Officials said the case also serves as a reminder for drivers not to leave vehicles running and unattended, even for a short time.
