Niceville, FL — A woman has been arrested after police say she forced her way into her estranged ex-husband’s home with a firearm and discharged a weapon during a confrontation early Saturday morning.
Officers with the Niceville Police Department responded around 5:22 a.m. on March 7, 2026, to a report of a disturbance involving a gun being fired inside a residence.
Initial information indicated the female suspect had fled the scene with a 9-month-old child, prompting an immediate investigation.
Authorities later determined that Shaniyah Monah Carmichael had arrived at the residence around 4:00 a.m. and allegedly forced her way into a bedroom while armed with a firearm. During a struggle inside the home, the weapon discharged once.
Investigators said the round struck the ceiling in the direction of the room where the couple’s 9-month-old son was located.
Detectives later located Carmichael’s vehicle at a residence in Shalimar, Florida. Officers made contact with her there and placed her under arrest.
Carmichael has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child neglect, battery, and firing a weapon on residential property.
Police later obtained and executed a search warrant at the Shalimar residence, where the child was found and safely returned to the father. Authorities also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident.
The Niceville Police Department thanked the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations for assisting in the case.
The investigation remains ongoing.
