Clay County Jury Convicts Man of Second-Degree Murder in 2020 Christmas Shooting

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A Clay County jury has found Kiaun Miller guilty of Second-Degree Murder in the 2020 shooting death of the mother of his child, according to State Attorney Melissa Nelson.

With the conviction, Miller now faces up to life in Florida State Prison. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date by Judge Don Lester.

Prosecutors said Miller and the victim shared a young son. In December 2020, the victim and their 2-year-old child moved into an Orange Park apartment with Miller and his then-girlfriend.

On December 21, 2020, Miller and the victim left for what was supposed to be a day trip to Orlando. That evening, Miller returned to the apartment without the victim.

Four days later, the victim returned to the apartment to retrieve her son. According to investigators, an argument began that eventually turned physical.

During the confrontation, Miller retrieved a handgun and pointed it at the victim while she was holding their child, telling her she was not taking their son. As she attempted to leave, Miller followed her with the gun, took the child from her, and returned inside the apartment.

The victim then went back inside to get her son, where another argument occurred. Authorities said the victim slapped Miller during the confrontation.

Miller then shot the victim three times, even though she was unarmed. She died at the scene.

The case was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Ashley Terry and Cara Devlin. Miller now awaits sentencing, where he could receive a life sentence for the conviction.
