Florida Inmate Convicted of Attempted Murder in Prison Stabbing of Correctional Officer

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Volusia County jury has found an inmate guilty of attempting to murder a correctional officer during a violent attack inside a state prison, officials said.

After a three-day trial, Trevon Miller was convicted of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer in connection with a 2021 stabbing at Tomoka Correctional Institution.

According to prosecutors, the attack occurred during the early morning hours of September 27, 2021. Surveillance video showed Miller hiding behind a door in the prison laundry room before ambushing Correctional Officer Paul Lane. Authorities said Miller stabbed Lane multiple times in the face, back, and neck with a homemade weapon.

Officials said Miller stopped the attack and returned to his dormitory, where another correctional officer quickly placed him in handcuffs. Lane was transported to a hospital and later recovered from his injuries.

At the time of the attack, Miller was serving a 30-year sentence following convictions in Polk County for armed burglary, armed kidnapping, and sexual battery by force or deadly weapon in 2016.

“Correctional officers spend their days amongst some of the most violent and dangerous offenders,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said. “They deserve our respect, praise, and protection. Let this case be a warning to other inmates that they will suffer greatly when they harm our correctional officers.”

The case was investigated by the Florida Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General. Managing Assistant State Attorney Erica Kane and Chief Assistant State Attorney John Reid prosecuted the case. The Honorable Kathryn Weston presided over the trial.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 8, 2026. Prosecutors said Miller faces a mandatory life sentence as a prison releasee reoffender and habitual violent felony offender.
