Jacksonville Man Sentenced to Over 11 Years for Fentanyl, Meth Distribution

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison for drug trafficking offenses involving fentanyl and methamphetamine, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

James Herbert Asberry III, 39, was sentenced by Harvey E. Schlesinger to 11 years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. He entered his plea on July 17, 2024.

As part of the sentence, the court ordered the forfeiture of $18,938, which authorities said were proceeds from drug trafficking and were seized at the time of his arrest.

According to court documents, Asberry sold fentanyl and methamphetamine during a series of meetings in late 2023 and early 2024 to an undercover officer and a confidential source working with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Authorities arrested Asberry on Feb. 23, 2024. Investigators executed search warrants at his home in St. Johns County and at an apartment in Jacksonville where drugs were being stored.

During the searches, law enforcement recovered nearly two kilograms of methamphetamine, along with cocaine, fentanyl and the cash tied to the investigation.

The case was investigated by the DEA and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by federal authorities.
