JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Duval County jury has convicted a 34-year-old man of multiple felony charges in connection with the stabbing and carjacking of a man who was eating lunch beneath an Interstate 95 overpass in 2023, according to the Office of State Attorney Melissa Nelson.
On July 9, the jury found Raymond Rice Jr. guilty of attempted first-degree murder, armed carjacking, armed burglary and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Rice faces up to life in Florida State Prison. Circuit Judge Jeb Branham will impose sentence at a later date.
The charges stem from an attack on June 10, 2023, when the victim was sitting in his parked vehicle beneath the Interstate 95 overpass on College Street.
According to prosecutors, the victim had just exited his vehicle when Rice approached from behind and attacked him with a knife. The victim was knocked to the ground, and Rice stabbed him in the neck before stealing his vehicle and driving away.
Despite his injuries, the victim made his way to a nearby park, where he collapsed while seeking help. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators said the victim’s wallet and cellphone were inside the vehicle when it was stolen. The vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center database as stolen.
The following day, a person in Georgia found the victim’s cellphone along a highway and contacted the victim’s family to return it. The stolen vehicle was later recovered in Savannah, Georgia.
According to prosecutors, Rice was identified as the suspect after members of his own family recognized him in surveillance photographs. The victim also positively identified Rice in a photographic lineup.
Rice remained a fugitive until Nov. 11, 2025, when he was arrested in Jackson, New Jersey.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant State Attorneys Ross Wade and Trinity Turinetti prosecuted the case.
