DELAND, Fla. – A 17-year-old DeLand resident has been arrested in connection with the July 29 double homicide that claimed the lives of two teenagers, the DeLand Police Department announced.
Keyan Rundell was taken into custody without incident Tuesday morning in Manatee County and is charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
The investigation began after officers responded at approximately 10:40 p.m. on July 29 to a report of two deceased individuals at a vacant industrial property in the 200 block of West New York Avenue.
The victims were identified as 19-year-old Dustin Rose and 18-year-old Samson Campbell.
According to police, investigators identified Rundell as a person of interest by the afternoon of July 30 after reviewing surveillance video collected from the crime scene.
Authorities said detectives worked alongside federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to build the case.
Late Saturday night, investigators executed a search warrant that resulted in the recovery of clothing and an e-bike they believe Rundell was using on the night of the killings. Detectives also recovered digital evidence that allegedly documented his movements immediately after the homicides. Rundell was not at the residence when the warrant was served.
Working with the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, investigators tracked Rundell to Florida’s west coast, where he was arrested. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office also assisted throughout the investigation.
“I am incredibly proud of how hard my team worked,” DeLand Police Chief Jason D. Umberger said. “Nearly 1,200 hours of personnel time was dedicated to this case in less than a week to find answers for these families.”
Umberger said investigators have not established a motive but believe Rundell knew both victims. According to the investigation, the suspect and the victims met on the evening of July 29, and an altercation occurred before the fatal shootings.
“We hope that this arrest can bring some sense of justice to the families for the tragic loss of life that they are experiencing,” Umberger said.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains active. Detectives are continuing to determine whether anyone else participated in the crime or helped conceal Rundell’s whereabouts after the killings. Additional arrests are possible.
