Four Arrested in Murder of 18-Year-Old at Jacksonville Park, JSO Says Suspects Were in U.S. Illegally

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four people, including three teenagers, have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old legal refugee at a Jacksonville park, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, Marvin Oporta Garcia, 18, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at Jacksonville Drew Park off Barnes Road on July 16.

JSO District 3 patrol officers responded to the park following a report of a shooting. Oporta Garcia died from his injuries before he could receive medical treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.

JSO said Oporta Garcia was legally in the United States as a refugee.

Four Suspects Identified in Homicide Investigation

Jacksonville homicide detectives began investigating the killing and ultimately identified four suspects:

  • Jose Hernandez Bermudez, 16
  • Kleber Martinez, 17
  • Daniel Ramirez Mato, 18
  • Russell Oliva Reyes, 21

The sheriff’s office said investigators determined that all four suspects were in the United States without legal immigration status.

According to JSO, Martinez and Oliva Reyes are from Honduras, Ramirez Mato is from Cuba and Hernandez Bermudez is from Nicaragua.

The sheriff’s office did not disclose how investigators determined the suspects’ immigration status or when they entered the United States.

Arrests Made One Month After Fatal Shooting

On Saturday, Aug. 15, investigators arrested Hernandez Bermudez, Martinez and Ramirez Mato.

Oliva Reyes was arrested the following day, Aug. 16.

All four suspects were booked into the Duval County Jail, according to JSO. The sheriff’s office said federal authorities were also contacted because of the suspects’ immigration status.

JSO’s release did not specify the individual criminal charges filed against each suspect or provide details about their alleged roles in Oporta Garcia’s death.

Investigators also have not publicly disclosed a suspected motive for the shooting or described what allegedly happened immediately before Oporta Garcia was shot.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the homicide investigation is continuing as detectives work to seek justice for Oporta Garcia.
