GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two teenagers have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in Gainesville after police said one suspect was located during a traffic stop and the other was arrested while suffering from a gunshot wound.
The investigation began around 8:20 p.m. Sept. 10, when Gainesville Police officers responded to numerous reports of gunfire in the 100 block of Southeast 16th Avenue.
Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he died from his injuries.
Police have not released the victim’s identity.
Christian Eugene Howard, 18, was taken into custody after Gainesville Police SWAT officers and detectives served a search warrant at a residence while looking for him. Howard was not there when the warrant was executed, but the Florida Highway Patrol later located him during a traffic stop.
Howard was transported to the Alachua County Jail and charged with murder while engaged in robbery, robbery with a firearm and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a Florida delinquent.
A second suspect, Carey Showers Jr., 18, was arrested Sept. 11 and also charged with homicide in connection with the shooting.
Police said Showers was suffering from a gunshot wound when he was arrested and was receiving medical treatment. Authorities have not said how he was shot or provided additional details about his alleged role in the homicide.
The investigation remains active.
