Perry Ivory Wims, 39, of Tampa, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison on November 21, 2024, after pleading guilty in August to charges of possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
According to court records, the Tampa Police Department (TPD) had gathered information that Wims was selling fentanyl from his motel room. Officers obtained a search warrant and observed Wims pointing a firearm at individuals in the motel parking lot before executing the warrant. Inside the room, officers discovered fentanyl, cocaine, two firearms, ammunition, and a drum magazine.
Wims, who had previously served a 15-year federal sentence for firearm possession as a convicted felon, had only been out of prison for less than three months before his arrest. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.
The case was investigated by the Tampa Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys David P. Sullivan and James A. Muench.
