Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Launches Traffic Enforcement Initiative to Protect Pedestrians and Cyclists

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has announced a high-visibility traffic enforcement effort aimed at improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety throughout Duval County. The initiative is funded by a $111,415.68 contract from the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Enforcement Timeline and Focus

Beginning Tuesday, December 10, 2024, and running through mid-May 2025, JSO officers will conduct targeted traffic enforcement in high-traffic areas. The initiative will emphasize education and compliance with traffic laws that protect vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

While the primary goal is education, officers will issue warnings or citations as necessary, depending on observed violations.

Safety Reminders for Road Users

  • Cyclists: Bicycles are considered vehicles under the law. Cyclists must obey all traffic rules and ensure their bicycles are equipped with front and rear lights if operated between sunset and sunrise.
  • Pedestrians and Cyclists: Reflective clothing is recommended for increased visibility at night.
  • Drivers: Motorists are urged to stay alert for pedestrians and cyclists and prioritize sharing the road safely.
