Clay County 11-Year-Old Student Arrested for Threatening School Shooting in Text Messages

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has arrested 11-year-old Korey Harris, a 4th-grade student at Discovery Oaks Elementary in Orange Park, after an investigation into threatening text messages made by the child.

On November 25, 2024, Harris engaged in an online chat with at least eight other students. Following a disagreement over social interactions, Harris posted a message stating that he would “shoot up a school.” The message was shared among students in the following days, prompting a report from an uninvolved parent to the CCSO on December 15, 2024.

CCSO conducted a thorough investigation, including interviews with the involved parties and family members. Harris’ phone was seized for forensic examination, and a school threat assessment was carried out. The investigation revealed that Harris had a prior incident of threatening violence last year.

As a result, Harris was arrested on charges related to making a written or electronic threat to commit mass violence. He was transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice – Duval Detention Center. Parents and guardians of any potential victims have been notified.

Sheriff Michelle Cook emphasized the seriousness of school threats, stating, “We take every single tip received very seriously and a thorough investigation is conducted. I have zero tolerance for school threats. Parents, please speak with your children about the consequences of making such statements.”

Harris was arrested under Florida State Statute 836.10, which makes it a second-degree felony to make written or electronic threats to harm another person or commit acts of terrorism.
