A Naples woman was arrested Wednesday after an investigation by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office revealed she stole thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise from Target by failing to scan all her items at self-checkout.
Kimberly McDonnell, 36, is charged with grand theft ($750-$5,000) after detectives determined she made 18 trips to the Target at 2415 Tarpon Bay Blvd. between November 30, 2024, and February 2, 2025, stealing a total of 151 items valued at $3,472.02.
The stolen merchandise included:
- $2.19 Dr. Pepper bottle
- $5.60 box of mechanical pencils
- $54.42 throw pillow
- $795 mattress
Target loss prevention employees contacted CCSO after noticing McDonnell frequently using self-checkout without scanning all items. Detectives reviewed surveillance footage confirming she repeatedly left the store without paying for unscanned merchandise before driving away in a silver SUV.
“It was obvious the suspect was not scanning the items with the intention of not paying for them,” detectives stated in the arrest report.
Investigators also noted McDonnell had a child with her during at least one of the incidents.
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk emphasized the impact of retail theft on the community, stating:
“Retail theft costs everyone money, and we have an obligation to do everything we can to stop these criminals.”
CCSO deputies located and arrested McDonnell on February 12, charging her with grand theft.
