The City of Jacksonville has identified $7,980,286 in unspent funds from the 2023-2024 fiscal year following its annual review process. The Mayor’s Budget Review Committee has unanimously approved funding for several significant projects, which will now go before the Jacksonville City Council for final approval.
Key allocations include:
- Fire Station Renovations: $4 million will be directed to renovate two fire stations—Fire Station #45 (15725 Sawpit Road) and Fire Station #54 (4220 Jones Road). Fire Station #45, an old volunteer station, requires upgrades to accommodate full-time firefighters, while Fire Station #54 needs remodeling to fit a tanker essential to the city’s ISO rating, which affects insurance rates.
- Firefighter PPE Wash Facility: $692,823 will be used to build a personal protective equipment (PPE) wash facility at 2610 Fairfax Street. This facility will provide a location to clean and inspect firefighter PPE, ensuring compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and enhancing emergency response readiness.
- UNF E-Sports Arena: $3 million will be allocated for the development of a state-of-the-art E-Sports Arena at the University of North Florida’s John A. Delaney Student Union. This facility aims to promote STEM education, attract national competitions, and boost the university’s enrollment, while contributing to Jacksonville’s future workforce.
“These projects reflect our commitment to investing in resources that provide long-term benefits for Jacksonville,” said Mayor Donna Deegan. “The improvements to our fire stations and the new UNF esports arena are investments in public safety and workforce development, positioning Jacksonville as a leader in key sectors.”
