A traffic stop led to a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday evening, June 27, prompting a death investigation by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began in North Port when a North Port Police Department officer initiated a traffic stop. The stop continued into Charlotte County and ended near the intersection of Eppinger Drive and Palmer Avenue in Port Charlotte.
As the officer approached the vehicle, he observed the driver holding a firearm. The officer immediately backed away and gave verbal commands. The driver then placed the weapon to his head and fired.
Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during the incident.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes detectives and Crime Scene Units are handling the investigation.
