Lake County Teen Arrested in Fatal Leesburg Shooting

An 18-year-old Mount Dora man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Leesburg man on Thursday evening, June 27, 2025.

Leesburg Police Officers responded to the 1000 block of Tuskegee Street at approximately 7:00 PM after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers and EMS personnel provided aid to the victim, Dontae D. Copeland, 20, of Leesburg. Copeland was transported to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased despite life-saving efforts.

While Leesburg Police Department detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were processing the scene, the father of 18-year-old Kameryn Andre Pickard of Mount Dora brought his son to the Leesburg Police Department, where he surrendered.

Detectives interviewed Pickard and subsequently placed him under arrest. Authorities are currently working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate charges. The crime scene remains active as detectives continue to seek witnesses, video surveillance, and additional evidence.
