JACKSONVILLE, FL – A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer is recovering in the hospital following a shooting that occurred Tuesday on Norfolk Boulevard near Soutel Drive.
JSO identified the injured officer as L. Mercado. According to officials, Mercado responded to reports of an armed robbery at a nearby business. Upon locating the suspect, a 20-year-old Black male, a foot pursuit ensued. During the attempted arrest, the suspect fired at Officer Mercado, striking him. Mercado returned fire, critically injuring the suspect.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Officer Mercado was taken to the hospital and is reported to be recovering. Authorities have asked for privacy for him and his family during this time.
The State Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident. Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker are expected to release additional details as the investigation progresses.
