Orange Park, FL – On August 27, 2025, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) opened an investigation following allegations of child abuse reported by the principal of W.E. Cherry Elementary School, located at 420 Edson Drive.

The incident occurred on August 26, 2025, around 9:45 a.m. while a student was working with his speech therapist. Pearl Gyamera, 47, the school’s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Behavioral Assistant, was responsible for managing the student’s behavior during physical or emotional outbursts. According to investigators, the student kicked Gyamera during the session. Gyamera reportedly responded by kicking the student three times while asking him how it felt and if it hurt. The student did not sustain any injuries.

Following interviews with all parties, including adult witnesses, Gyamera was arrested and charged with Child Abuse Without Great Harm.

Gyamera has been employed with the Clay County School District since August 2016 and has no prior disciplinary record or criminal history. The school district has placed her on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
