JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man has been arrested after police say he struck and killed a 13-year-old girl with his truck and fled the scene.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced that 54-year-old Andre Myers is in custody following the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of Genesis Webber on Tuesday night.
Around Tuesday evening, September 30th, District 2 Patrol officers responded to a crash on Arlington Road North, where they found Genesis on the side of the road. She died at the scene. Surveillance video from the area showed a truck veering off the road, hitting Genesis as she walked on the sidewalk, then crashing through a chain-link fence before speeding away.
JSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit immediately began investigating, collecting evidence that quickly led them to identify Myers as the suspect. Working with the Crime Analysis Unit and Real Time Crime Center, detectives tracked the vehicle’s movements. They learned Myers was out on bond for felony charges and wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the crash.
Late Wednesday night, officers found Myers asleep in his truck and took him into custody without incident. He is now being held in the Duval County Jail.
“The loss of any life is tragic, but the loss of an innocent young life makes this case much more difficult,” JSO said in a statement. “We hope this quick arrest brings peace to Genesis’s family and friends while they mourn her loss.”
JSO said they are working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure Myers faces the full extent of the law.
