Substitute Teacher Arrested After Encouraging Student Fight at Duval County Middle School

DUVAL COUNTY, FL – A 29-year-old substitute teacher is facing serious criminal charges after investigators say she encouraged two students to fight while on a Duval County middle school campus.

According to Duval County School Police, the incident occurred in October while Ladejah Shaw was working as a substitute teacher. During an outdoor class period, students gathered into a circle around two classmates as tensions escalated. Several students began recording on their cell phones as the situation unfolded.

Investigators say video evidence captured Shaw actively encouraging the students to fight rather than intervening to stop the confrontation. The fight proceeded while other students looked on, many continuing to record the incident.

Following the altercation, school police conducted interviews with multiple students and reviewed the cell phone footage. Based on the evidence, authorities determined that Shaw intentionally allowed and encouraged the fight to take place, failing in her responsibility to protect the students in her care.

On Tuesday night, officers located Shaw at her apartment and took her into custody without incident. She is now facing multiple charges, including felony child neglect.

Duval County School Police emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating that educators are entrusted with guiding and protecting students, not placing them in harm’s way. The investigation remains ongoing.
