Port Charlotte Man Arrested for Fatal Shooting of Father, Turns Himself In

Port Charlotte, Fla. – A 25-year-old man was arrested after fatally shooting his father and later returning to the scene to surrender to authorities.

Just after 7 p.m. on Monday, December 8, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots near Abscott Street. Deputies arrived to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the driveway. The victim was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries. The Major Case Unit took over the investigation.

While officers were on scene, the victim’s vehicle arrived, and Melquan A. Stewart, 25, exited and approached the deputies covered in blood. He told investigators he was turning himself in and confessed to the shooting. Stewart was taken into custody without incident and is currently held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond on a murder charge.

“I cannot imagine many things worse for a family to go through than something like this, especially during the holiday season. My heart goes out to the rest of the family as they cope with this unbearable situation, essentially the loss of two loved ones at the same time, and the long, difficult road ahead through the justice system. May God watch over them and keep them strong,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell.

The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing.
