Tenant Charged With Murder in Fatal Shooting of Landlord in Port Charlotte

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A man was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after deputies say he shot and killed his landlord during a physical altercation inside a Port Charlotte home last week.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at about 1:39 p.m. on January 7, 2026, to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 23000 block of Van Buren Avenue. The Major Crimes Unit was called to the scene to investigate.

Detectives determined that 39-year-old Jordan Patrick Ruddy was involved in a physical confrontation with his landlord at the residence. During the altercation, investigators say Ruddy fired a handgun multiple times, striking and killing the victim.

Ruddy was located at the scene and taken into custody without incident. He was charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and failure to register as a felon, according to investigators.

“This is an individual who clearly could not conduct himself properly, as evident by his criminal history,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a statement. “Now, that behavior has violently cost someone their life.”

Prummell said his thoughts were with the victim’s loved ones. “My heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends as they start a new year off with a terrible and senseless loss,” he said.
