NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – A suspect wanted in a stolen vehicle case out of Southwest Florida died Thursday after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound while in custody in Yulee, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.
Just after noon, deputies located a reported stolen vehicle and made contact with the suspect at a Culver’s in Yulee. Investigators said the suspect had traveled north into Nassau County after allegedly stealing the vehicle.
Deputies detained the suspect and placed them in handcuffs. Authorities said the suspect appeared to have a concealed firearm, which discharged inside the rear of the patrol vehicle, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Nassau County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced dead. No deputies were injured during the incident.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation, which is standard protocol in incidents involving serious injury or death. The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal review to determine whether any policy violations occurred.
Sheriff’s officials said the information released is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.
