JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two men have been arrested in connection with a 2022 apartment break-in that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced.
Authorities said Tyss Harris, 23, and Talint Curtis, 25, were arrested on charges of Murder and Armed Burglary stemming from a September 1, 2022 incident.
On that night, District 3 Patrol officers responded to an apartment complex off Kernan Boulevard after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, a tenant told them three masked men had forced entry into his apartment and fired shots. The tenant returned fire.
Less than an hour later, District 4 Patrol officers were dispatched to a hospital on 103rd Street, where Melvin Keepler Jr., 23, was found outside suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died from his injuries.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit launched an investigation and ultimately determined that Keepler Jr., along with Harris and Curtis, were the masked individuals involved in the apartment break-in.
Detectives gathered evidence over time that led to arrest warrants for both suspects.
On June 24, 2025, detectives obtained a warrant for Harris and, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force, arrested him the same day. Investigators continued building their case against Curtis.
Curtis was arrested on February 24, 2026, in Bay County, Florida, and transported back to Duval County, where he was booked into jail on February 27.
Officials emphasized their continued commitment to solving homicide cases, regardless of how much time has passed.
“Our hearts are with Keepler Jr.’s loved ones,” the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
