Drunk Driver Crashes Into Jacksonville Patrol Vehicle During I-10 Lane Closure

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A suspected drunk driver crashed into a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle early Thursday morning while an officer was inside the SUV working a lane closure on Interstate 10.

The crash occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on westbound I-10 near the Lane Avenue exit. According to authorities, the marked patrol SUV was parked with emergency lights activated to warn drivers of a lane closure.

Police said 29 year old Cate Kitay drove a Ram 2500 pickup truck into the patrol vehicle.

The impact pushed Kitay’s truck forward into an unoccupied utility truck parked on the shoulder. The utility truck was equipped with an attenuator, a crash absorbing safety device designed to protect workers in road construction zones.

The officer inside the patrol vehicle was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and is expected to recover.

Authorities said the crash occurred while construction crews were working nearby.

Officials reminded drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles or work zones and warned against driving under the influence.
