Edgewater Police Use PIT Maneuvers to Capture Burglary Suspect After Pursuit

EDGEWATER, Fla. — A man wanted in connection with a residential burglary was arrested Tuesday after a vehicle pursuit through Edgewater ended with two PIT maneuvers, authorities said.

According to the Edgewater Police Department, officers assisted the Volusia Sheriff’s Office in apprehending Jarkvis Peoples after he fled from deputies who were attempting to arrest him earlier in the day.

Investigators said Peoples entered Edgewater, where Edgewater police located his vehicle and initiated a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver in an effort to end the pursuit.

The first PIT maneuver damaged a rear tire, but Peoples continued driving for a short distance before officers executed a second PIT maneuver at Old Mission Road and Massey Drive, bringing the pursuit to an end.

During the chase, authorities said Peoples lightly struck a civilian vehicle. No injuries were reported.

After Peoples was taken into custody, officers discovered his 11-year-old daughter was inside the vehicle during the pursuit.

Investigators said the child was placed in danger throughout the chase, leading to an additional charge of child abuse.

According to the Edgewater Police Department, Peoples has been arrested five times in Volusia County over the past four years on charges that include burglary, fleeing and eluding, and narcotics trafficking.

The Edgewater Police Department commended the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and all officers involved in the arrest, stating the agency remains committed to holding violent offenders accountable and protecting the community.
