ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – A former Atlantic Beach Athletic Association treasurer has been arrested after an investigation revealed more than $60,000 was allegedly embezzled from the youth sports organization over a two-year period.
Atlantic Beach Police detectives arrested 43-year-old Daniel Barton Crews on Thursday, July 30, charging him with Grand Theft, a second-degree felony under Florida law.
According to investigators, Crews served as treasurer of the Atlantic Beach Athletic Association (ABAA) from 2023 through 2025.
The alleged theft was discovered after a new treasurer assumed the position in November 2025 and found that more than $60,000 was missing from the organization’s accounts.
Detectives said the investigation determined that more than 120 checks had been written from the association’s bank account directly to Crews and signed by him while he was serving as treasurer.
Authorities allege that most of the stolen funds were deposited into Crews’ personal bank account.
Crews was arrested Thursday morning, posted bond and was released from custody later the same day.
The case has been forwarded to the Office of State Attorney Melissa W. Nelson for Florida’s 4th Judicial Circuit for prosecution.
