YULEE, Fla. – A Nassau County investigation into stolen LEGO sets from a Yulee Target led detectives to what authorities describe as a larger organized retail theft operation responsible for more than $20,000 in stolen merchandise across Northeast Florida.
Ronald Lorne Tipton, identified by investigators as the “Lego Bandit,” was arrested Sept. 15 following a pursuit in a U-Haul that ended in Fernandina Beach.
The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said Tipton and others targeted expensive LEGO sets, loading shopping carts with merchandise and leaving stores through emergency exits without paying. Investigators said getaway vehicles were often positioned near the exits.
Detectives linked Tipton to three thefts from the Target on State Road 200 in Yulee on Aug. 18, Aug. 26 and Sept. 12.
During the first incident, investigators said Tipton entered the store around 8:24 p.m. and selected four high-priced LEGO sets before leaving without paying. The merchandise was valued at more than $900.
Tipton returned Aug. 26 and was captured on surveillance placing multiple LEGO sets into shopping carts before leaving the store and loading the merchandise into a white Mazda, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said the combined loss associated with that incident was about $2,500.
On Sept. 12, Tipton allegedly returned to the Target and took five more LEGO sets, placing them in a shopping cart before leaving through a fire exit and getting into a vehicle waiting nearby. The Sheriff’s Office placed the loss from that incident at just under $1,300.
The investigation culminated three days later at the Walmart on State Road 200.
Investigators said Tipton entered the store around 3:56 p.m., walked through the toy aisles looking at LEGO sets and then returned to a U-Haul parked behind the business.
He later went back inside and selected 12 LEGO sets, according to authorities. Walmart asset protection employees confronted him as he attempted to leave with the merchandise, and Tipton fled the store.
A Nassau County detective subsequently spotted Tipton driving the U-Haul on a service road near the former Chick-fil-A building and attempted to stop him.
As the detective tried to open the driver’s door, Tipton allegedly attempted to drive away and struck the detective’s left arm with the open door.
Deputies pursued the U-Haul into Fernandina Beach. The vehicle traveled into the Beach Diner parking lot on Sadler Road and then into a CVS parking lot, where a deputy used a patrol vehicle to pin the U-Haul against a tree, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Fernandina Beach police assisted deputies in taking Tipton and a second person, Jessica Underwood, into custody.
Investigators said Underwood was charged with unrelated drug offenses.
Authorities also reported finding suspected methamphetamine, crack cocaine and fentanyl during the investigation, including plastic bags containing a white crystalline substance on the passenger-side floorboard of the U-Haul.
The Sheriff’s Office said more than $3,000 worth of LEGO sets were stolen in Nassau County. Investigators subsequently connected Tipton to additional suspected organized retail thefts across Northeast Florida, bringing the alleged value of stolen merchandise to more than $20,000.
Tipton faces charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, coordinating others in retail theft involving more than $3,000, dealing in stolen property, possession of controlled substances and driving under the influence.
