Woman Fatally Shot by Jacksonville Police After Firing at Officers on Biscayne Boulevard

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was shot and killed by three Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers Sunday morning, Oct. 11, 2026, after authorities said she pulled a handgun from a bag and fired at officers, striking a patrol vehicle.

The shooting occurred near Biscayne Boulevard and Mar Vic Lane in Jacksonville, following a series of reports involving a woman allegedly pointing a firearm at people in the area over the weekend.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Mark Romano provided details about the incident, which marked the department’s 15th officer-involved shooting of 2026.

Police Received Multiple Reports of Armed Woman

According to JSO, the first report came around 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, when someone reported seeing a woman waving a gun near Monaco Drive and Beckner Avenue.

The woman was described as Black and wearing purple clothing. Responding officers searched the area but were unable to locate her.

Approximately an hour later, officers responded to Briarcliff Road East near Dunn Avenue after another caller reported that a woman matching the description had pointed a firearm at the caller and their dog.

Officers again searched the area but did not find the woman.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, JSO received a third report involving a woman allegedly pointing a gun at a man near Mar Vic Lane and Dunn Avenue.

When officers arrived, they encountered a woman they believed matched the description from the previous day’s incidents.

Officers Followed Woman Before Gunfire Erupted

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman began yelling at responding officers while reaching into several bags she was carrying.

Officers repeatedly ordered her to show her hands, but she continued walking away.

Police followed the woman for approximately a quarter-mile while continuing to issue commands.

During the encounter, one officer reportedly said, “I believe she has a gun.”

When the woman reached the intersection of Mar Vic Lane and Biscayne Boulevard, authorities said she pulled a firearm from one of her bags and fired a single shot.

The bullet struck the driver’s side door of a JSO patrol vehicle.

Three officers returned fire, striking the woman. She died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office did not report any injuries to officers.

State Attorney’s Office Investigating Fatal Shooting

Authorities have not released the woman’s identity because investigators were still working to notify her next of kin.

The names of the three officers involved in the shooting were also withheld, with JSO citing Marsy’s Law, Florida’s constitutional provision concerning victims’ rights.

The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.

Once that investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own review of the officers’ use of force.

The shooting remains under investigation.
