2017 Disney Dreamer and Raines graduate and Morehouse student Jordan Mills recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sit down and engage in a captivating conversation with filmmaker/producer/director Ava DuVernay. The discussion and dialogue was involving her latest film, “Origin.” The film is an adaptation of “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” a compelling book by Isabel Wilkerson that is an exploration of the United States’ caste system, drawing parallels with global counterparts, unraveling its historical roots in slavery and Jim Crow, and examining its pervasive influence on social hierarchies, discrimination, and systemic injustices across various facets of American life. The dialogue was held at the home of Spelman’s president.
“Ms. DuVernay’s work has consistently resonated with me on both an educational and emotional level. We got the chance to see the film in a private advanced screening,” said Mills. The film brings up the conversation and questions about how Americans classify racism and caste systems in America while also exploring the connections between India’s caste system, Nazi Germany’s hierarchies, and the historical subjugation of Black people in the United State. Mills represented the Cinema, Television and Emerging Media Studies (CTEMS) department of Morehouse College. Mills highly recommends everyone to experience this remarkable film, in theaters now!
