Port Orange Police Fatally Shoot Subject Wielding Knife During Well-Being Check

On March 19, 2024, at around 12:19 PM, the Port Orange Police Department responded to a well-being check following a report of a potentially suicidal individual. Upon arrival, officers found themselves in a confrontation with the subject.

As officers attempted to establish contact, the individual emerged from the front door of the residence wielding a large kitchen knife. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the individual charged towards one of the officers.

In response, the officer discharged three rounds from their department-issued handgun, incapacitating the subject. Immediate medical assistance was administered to the individual by the officers on scene, but the individual succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into the incident, which remains open and active.
