Port Orange Teen Arrested for Vehicular Homicide Following Fatal Street Racing Incident

Braden Lafferty, 19, of Port Orange, Florida, was arrested on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, on charges of Vehicular Homicide, Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death, and Racing on a Highway.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred on the morning of December 23, 2023, when Lafferty was involved in a street racing incident with another vehicle driven by the victim, Kayla Lawrence, age 32, also of Port Orange, Florida. The high-speed crash resulting from the racing incident caused Lawrence’s vehicle to leave the roadway and collide with a utility pole near the intersection of Dunlawton Avenue and Spruce Creek Road. Lawrence sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Following a thorough investigation, which included analyzing vehicle telemetry, collecting on-scene evidence and measurements, gathering witness statements, and examining digital forensic data, Lafferty was charged with the aforementioned offenses. He was subsequently arrested and booked under a “no bond” status. However, Lafferty has since posted a $51,000.00 bail bond and has been released.

Anyone with additional information regarding the case investigation is urged to contact the Port Orange Police Department at 386-506-5800 or Dispatch directly at 386-248-1777.
