Arrest Made in 2023 Jacksonville Shooting Case: Suspect Charged with Murder

On Friday, April 21, 2023, tragedy struck in Jacksonville as patrol officers from the Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting incident on Blanding Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found 32-year-old Paul Steney with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts from Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, Steney succumbed to his injuries.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office swiftly initiated investigations led by their Homicide and Crime Scene Units. Their inquiries revealed that Steney was a victim of robbery, leading to his fatal shooting. The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Matthew Hutchins.

Almost two weeks later, on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, the U.S. Marshal Service apprehended Hutchins for a separate Violation of Probation Warrant related to burglary charges. Despite his incarceration at Hamilton Correctional Institute, JSO detectives relentlessly pursued the case.

Finally, on April 4, 2024, an arrest warrant was secured for Hutchins. He was transported to the Police Memorial Building for questioning and subsequently charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
