Jury Convicts Man of Second-Degree Murder in Deaths of Woman and Unborn Child

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that a Duval County jury found Bursey Armstrong Jr. guilty of two counts of Second-Degree Murder for the deaths of Tasheeka Young and her unborn child. Armstrong faces a maximum sentence of life in Florida State Prison, with a 25-year minimum mandatory term due to the firearm discharge resulting in death. Sentencing by the Honorable Tatiana Salvador will occur at a later date.

The incident took place on July 23, 2022, when a neighbor called 911 after hearing noises from Young’s Biscayne Bay Boulevard apartment. The neighbor reported hearing Young plead, “Please don’t, I love you,” followed by a loud noise and then silence, except for the sounds of crying children. Officers arrived but could not find probable cause to enter the apartment. The following day, Young’s mother discovered her daughter dead on the bedroom floor after being unable to reach her. Young, a popular local radio DJ, had been shot twice, and her two young children were found nearby. Young’s son informed his grandmother and officers that “daddy hurt mommy.”

Armstrong, the father of Young’s children, had a history of a tumultuous relationship with her. At the time of her death, Young was pregnant with their third child. Following the incident, Armstrong appeared at the crime scene and was detained for questioning. A search warrant executed at Armstrong’s parents’ residence revealed a recently dug hole under backyard steps containing a firearm, as well as bloody clothing nearby. Forensic analysis confirmed that the firearm was used in the murder, with Young’s DNA found on the clothing.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation, and the prosecution was led by Assistant State Attorneys Sheila Loizos and Carleshia Jimerson.
