On Thursday, August 8, deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) were investigating Paul David Badovinac, 41, of Homosassa, for felony battery on an elderly victim. Deputies located Badovinac at a residence on West Jarovi Court in Homosassa, but he fled on foot when approached.
A deputy pursued Badovinac into a heavily wooded area off West Linden Drive, where Badovinac confronted the deputy and began fighting. During the altercation, Badovinac made several attempts to remove the deputy’s service weapon from its holster. He then released his grip, armed himself with a knife, and threatened the deputy from just a few feet away. In response, the deputy drew his service weapon and fired two rounds at Badovinac, stopping the threat.
Badovinac received medical aid at the scene and was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently in stable condition. After his release from the hospital, he will be arrested and charged accordingly.
Sheriff Michael Prendergast commented on the incident, stating, “I am appalled by Mr. Badovinac’s actions toward a vulnerable member of our community. Thanks to the quick actions taken by our deputies, he will answer for his crimes.”
As per agency policy, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The deputy involved will be placed on administrative leave, following standard operating procedures.
