59-Year-Old Woman Found Guilty of Manslaughter by Use of a Firearm in Neighbor’s Death

On Friday, August 16, 2024, Susan Louise Lorincz, 59, was found guilty of Manslaughter by Use of a Firearm in the case involving the death of her neighbor, 35-year-old Ajike “AJ” Owens. The verdict followed a weeklong trial where jurors reviewed evidence and heard testimonies from over 30 witnesses.

Ajike Owens was fatally shot on June 2, 2023, at the Quail Run apartment complex in Marion County. Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded initially to a call about juveniles trespassing. While en route, the MCSO Communications Center reported shots fired. Deputies arrived to find Ajike in front of Lorincz’s apartment with a gunshot wound to her upper right chest. She received first aid from responders while Lorincz was taken into custody.

Bill Gladson, Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney, commented on the case: “This case is undoubtedly a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence. The defendant’s choices have left four young children without their mother, a loss that will be felt for the rest of their lives. While today’s verdict can’t bring AJ back, we hope it brings some measure of justice and peace to her family and friends.”

The conviction could result in a 30-year prison sentence for Lorincz. The prosecution was led by Assistant State Attorneys Richard Buxman and Adam Smith.
