Off-Duty Corrections Officer Shot and Killed in Violent Dispute on Duval Road

On October 12, 2024, Sheriff T.K. Waters, accompanied by Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief of Investigation Alan Parker, provided details regarding the tragic murder of Corrections Officer Bradley McNew.

At approximately 1:20 a.m., a violent altercation occurred in the 12900 block of Duval Road involving a black Mustang occupied by a black male suspect and a female. Witnesses reported the suspect exiting the passenger side of the vehicle, moving to the driver’s side, and placing a black handgun on the hood of the car. He then forcibly removed the female from the driver’s seat, throwing her against the vehicle and the ground.

Off-duty Corrections Officer McNew, who had just completed his shift, heard the commotion and approached to check on the female victim. The suspect initially told Officer McNew that it was a “family matter” before re-engaging with the female. The situation escalated when the suspect pointed the firearm at Officer McNew.

As the suspect and the female returned to the vehicle, they were seen leaving the scene with the suspect hanging out of the window and firing the gun, ultimately striking Officer McNew. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

This investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, considering the suspect armed and dangerous. The vehicle involved is described as a 2000s black Mustang with a North Carolina license plate number RHL-4285, last reported heading northbound on Main Street towards Nassau County.

Citizens are advised not to approach the suspect or the vehicle and to call 911 immediately if spotted.
