On October 28, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., Sheriff T.K. Waters and Director Mark Romano provided an update on an officer-involved shooting that occurred during the investigation of a reported carjacking at Eaverson Street and Grothe Street.
While officers were on scene, an uninvolved individual approached the carjacking victim’s family and began to harass them. Officers heard the family shout, “He’s got a knife,” and witnessed the individual attacking a family member. As officers approached, they observed the suspect, later identified as 54-year-old Djuan Jackson, actively stabbing the victim. In response, the officers fired their weapons, striking Jackson multiple times.
Once the scene was secured, it was determined that Jackson was armed with a butter knife, and the victim did not suffer any puncture wounds. Jackson has a prior arrest history that includes Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Concealed Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
This incident marks the sixth officer-involved shooting for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this year. The officers involved in the shooting are identified as J. Rose, with two years of service, and J. Montgomery, with five years of service. A Critical Incident Briefing, including body-worn camera footage and additional details, will be released within 21 days as part of the sheriff’s office’s commitment to transparency.
