A Duval County jury has found Akeem Black guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Attempted Manslaughter, Armed Robbery, Battery, and Improper Exhibition of a Firearm in connection to a violent altercation in a Jacksonville drive-thru. Black now faces a possible life sentence, with sentencing by the Honorable Judge London Kite to be scheduled at a later date.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 10, 2023, at a restaurant on University Boulevard. According to evidence presented in court, Black argued with a female employee while waiting in the drive-thru. The confrontation escalated when Black drew his firearm, pistol-whipping the employee. When she attempted to record him on her phone, Black reportedly grabbed her phone and threw it into the grass. After alerting a coworker, the employee went outside to retrieve her phone, accompanied by the armed coworker. Upon seeing them outside, Black fired multiple shots, hitting the coworker in the thigh. Black then continued firing into the restaurant as he fled the scene.
Key evidence included cellphone and surveillance footage, witness interviews, and physical evidence collected from Black’s vehicle. He later arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound in his arm, dressed as he appeared in the footage, with bullet holes visible in his car, a firearm, and a restaurant cup in plain view. A search of his vehicle also uncovered a receipt from the restaurant at the time of the shooting.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Marcus Isom Jr. and Donna Thurson.
