Officer-Involved Shooting in Jacksonville Leaves Dog Injured and Bystander Hospitalized

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Friday at College Street and Willowbranch Avenue. Chief of Investigations Alan Parker provided details of the incident, which began as a dispute and escalated to an armed disturbance.

An individual, accompanied by her 4-year-old child and German Shepherd service dog, was searching near the railroad tracks for items stolen during an unrelated auto burglary. The search led to a confrontation with a bicycle owner who mistook her actions for tampering with his bike. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, and one party called the police.

Responding officers detained the bicycle owner in a patrol vehicle and attempted to speak with the other individual. During the interaction, Officer M. Jones was bitten on the thigh by the woman’s service dog. Officer Jones discharged his firearm, striking the dog. One of the bullets ricocheted, hitting the woman in the shin with an unknown fragment. She was transported to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover. The child was unharmed, and the dog is expected to survive.

Officer M. Jones, who has served eight months with JSO and has 25 years of prior law enforcement experience in Washington, D.C., sustained minor injuries. This marks the eighth officer-involved shooting for JSO in 2024.

The investigation is ongoing.
