State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that a Clay County jury has found William Burroughs guilty of Manslaughter with a Weapon, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, and Battery (Domestic). Burroughs faces up to 30 years in Florida State Prison as a Prison Release Reoffender. Sentencing will be determined by the Honorable James Kallaher at a later date.
The case stems from a violent incident on February 2, 2023, when Burroughs attacked his girlfriend during an argument. After she attempted to flee their bedroom, Burroughs punched her repeatedly in the face, prompting her to scream for help. Neighborhood children overheard the commotion and alerted two adults, who intervened.
While one of the adults blocked the door to protect the girlfriend as she called 911, Burroughs stabbed the man in the back. A struggle ensued with the other adult, during which the girlfriend suffered severe injuries. She was rushed to the hospital by Clay County Fire Rescue but succumbed to blood loss from the attack. The male victim was treated for a stab wound and survived.
The investigation was conducted by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Hector Murcia Bustos and Jamie Cona.
