Javier Alejandro Anaya-Leal, 31, of Ruskin, has been sentenced by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday to eight years in federal prison for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute over 50 grams of methamphetamine and 500 grams of cocaine, as well as possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute. Additionally, Anaya-Leal has been ordered to forfeit $9,750, which was traced to proceeds from the offenses. Anaya-Leal entered a guilty plea on July 11, 2024.
Court documents revealed that between 2022 and 2023, Anaya-Leal distributed over 1,400 grams of 97% pure methamphetamine and four kilograms of cocaine. Between July and September 2022, he sold the methamphetamine to a confidential informant working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
On March 4, 2024, Anaya-Leal arranged to sell two to three kilograms of cocaine to the informant. The meeting took place at Anaya-Leal’s Hillsborough County residence, where a courier, identified as Matias Sanchez Cardosa, delivered four kilograms of cocaine. Before the transaction could be completed, law enforcement moved in and arrested both Anaya-Leal and Cardosa. The four kilograms of cocaine were discovered in Cardosa’s vehicle, intended for distribution in the Middle District of Florida.
Cardosa was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on October 21, 2024.
The case was investigated by the DEA and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shauna S. Hale.
