The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Bartow Police Department in the investigation into the fatal shooting of 63-year-old Marvin Voigt and the serious wounding of his wife, 58-year-old Susan Voigt, by their son, Joseph Voigt. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at approximately 11:20 p.m. inside their home in Bartow.
Upon arrival, officers found Marvin Voigt deceased in the driveway from apparent gunshot wounds. Susan Voigt, with a serious gunshot wound, was found inside the residence. She told officers that her son, Joseph, had shot them both before fleeing the scene. Susan was transported to the hospital and is currently in critical but stable condition.
A BOLO (Be On the Look Out) notice was issued for Joseph Voigt’s vehicle, which was later spotted in Orlando. At around 2:00 a.m., the Orlando Police Department conducted a felony traffic stop and arrested Joseph Voigt. He is currently in the Orange County Jail, awaiting transport to the Polk County Jail.
Voigt admitted to shooting his parents, stating his father was upset with him for spending too much time playing video games and not pursuing a job. Voigt has a criminal history, including arrests for firing a weapon in a residential area and battery.
“Thanks to the rapid response of the Bartow Police Department this violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended. They asked for our assistance and we were happy to oblige. My detectives will continue their thorough investigation into this crime to ensure Voigt will face the full consequences of his actions.”, said Sheriff Grady Judd.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting. We sincerely appreciate the assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in this case, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect, Joseph Voigt.”, said Chief Stephen Walker, Bartow Police Department.
