On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) successfully resolved a seven-hour standoff at 2917 NE 10th Drive, which began after shots were fired at Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) workers responding to a gas leak.
At approximately 1:40 p.m., GRU employees, in clearly marked vehicles and uniforms, arrived at the residence to address a reported gas leak. After receiving no response at the door, the workers proceeded to the backyard to begin repairs. While working, two shots were fired from inside the residence. One worker observed a muzzle flash from a window, and another reported hearing a bullet ricochet. The workers quickly evacuated and contacted 911.
Officers in the vicinity of an unrelated call responded immediately, and additional units, including the Co-Responder Team, quickly established a perimeter and blocked surrounding streets.
Preliminary investigation identified the homeowner as 43-year-old Carlton Beck Renshaw. Family members described Renshaw as a loner with no social media presence or friends. They confirmed that he owned multiple firearms, including a rifle, shotgun, and handgun, and expressed concerns about his behavior.
Drone teams from GPD and Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) conducted aerial reconnaissance of the property, which featured a concrete bunker in the backyard. Despite repeated public address announcements, Renshaw did not respond.
Around 9 p.m., after securing a search warrant, GPD’s SWAT team, along with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO), deployed an armored BearCat vehicle to breach the front door. ASO’s robotic device was used to search the interior. The robot’s camera discovered a rifle and Renshaw lying motionless under blankets on a bed.
SWAT officers entered the residence and took Renshaw into custody without further incident. He was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation before being brought to the Alachua County Jail. He faces multiple charges of aggravated assault.
The Gainesville Police Department commended the collaboration between its units, neighboring agencies, and GRU, ensuring a safe resolution to the situation.
