Sarasota Police arrested two 15-year-old suspects in connection with a series of bicycle thefts reported across the city, recovering a stolen electric bike and a firearm during an undercover operation on Tuesday afternoon.
Detectives conducted the operation in the 2700 block of Cocoanut Avenue to recover a stolen electric bicycle. As officers attempted to apprehend the juvenile suspects, one fled the scene.
During the chase, detectives observed the fleeing suspect discard a firearm into Whitaker Bayou. The suspect was quickly taken into custody, and members of the Sarasota Police Underwater Search and Recovery Team recovered the firearm from the water.
The two suspects were identified as Cayden Robinson, 15, and Jumar Edwards, 15. Robinson is charged with Dealing in Stolen Property, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by an Adjudicated Juvenile, and Obstruction. Edwards faces a charge of Dealing in Stolen Property-Principle.
The stolen electric bicycle was recovered during the operation.
Sarasota Police continue to investigate thefts related to online marketplace transactions and urge residents to exercise caution when buying or selling items secondhand.
Tips for staying safe include meeting in monitored public spaces like the SPD Transaction Safe Place at 2099 Adams Lane, avoiding large cash transactions, and meeting during daylight hours.
