Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students at George T. Baker Aviation Technical College are taking flight in their aviation maintenance careers, thanks to a new partnership with American Airlines. This collaboration will provide students with hands-on engagement with American’s Technical Operations team at the Miami International Airport (MIA) hub and on campus, along with guaranteed interviews for top-performing students after graduation and receipt of their FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification.
The announcement builds on a long-standing relationship between the airline and the school, which has been instrumental in training the next generation of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). American Airlines also made a significant contribution in 2010, donating a McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft for use in training. Students from George T. Baker Aviation recently showcased their skills in the 2024 Aerospace Maintenance Council Competition, winning first place in two events and securing second place in the overall School category, with mentorship from American’s MIA-based Technical Operations team.
“George T. Baker Aviation Technical College has long been recognized for its leadership in aviation education, and we’ve hired many of their graduates,” said Evie Garces, American’s Vice President of Line Maintenance. “This partnership ensures that we’ll continue hiring the most skilled AMTs, who will keep our fleet flying safely for years to come.”
The college, established in 1939 and accredited by both the Council on Occupational Education and the National Center for Aircraft Technician Training, serves approximately 1,000 high school and adult students. It is one of only two schools in Florida to be NCATT-accredited and the only one in the nation offering NCATT-certified courses to high school students.
Dr. Jose L. Dotres, Superintendent of M-DCPS, emphasized the significance of the partnership in shaping future leaders in the aviation industry. “At George T. Baker Aviation Technical College, innovation and excellence are the wings that lift our students to new horizons,” he stated.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava highlighted the importance of investing in education for a thriving local economy. “Through inspiring partnerships like this, we are preparing our workers to access good jobs and succeed in the industries of the future,” she said.
American employs more than 14,600 team members at its MIA hub, including more than 1,200 Technical Operations team members — many of whom are George T. Baker alumni. Candidates interested in joining American’s team can view open opportunities and apply at jobs.aa.com.
