Just one week after being honored with the Back the Blue Award, Lake County Sheriff’s Office K9 Samba and her handler, Erica Stamborski, showcased their exceptional skills once again during a routine visit to Leesburg High School.
On January 16, 2025, while proactively walking the campus, K9 Samba alerted to a backpack in the media room, an area where students typically leave belongings. No students were present at the time. A search of the backpack revealed a loaded Glock 9mm handgun, later confirmed to be stolen out of Lake County. The discovery led to the felony arrest of a student by the Leesburg Police Department.
In addition to the firearm, K9 Samba also detected three vapes and a cigar in other backpacks during the visit.
Samba and Stamborski were recently recognized with the prestigious Back the Blue Award by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody for their outstanding efforts in detecting vapes and THC in schools. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office praised the pair for their unwavering dedication to maintaining a safe learning environment for students.
