On January 24, 2025, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) received information from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia regarding Matthew Steven Rollie, 30, who was wanted on an active warrant for Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes. Rollie, a registered Sexual Offender, had failed to register in DeSoto County. The DCSO Criminal Investigative Division and Uniformed Patrol Division searched for Rollie throughout the afternoon and evening, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Early the next morning, at approximately 2:16 a.m. on January 25, 2025, two DCSO deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of State Road 72 between Thigpen Road and Addison Avenue, suspecting it was occupied by Rollie. Upon confirming Rollie was in the passenger seat, the situation quickly escalated when Rollie armed himself with a firearm and began firing at the deputies, striking one of them multiple times.
The deputies returned fire, and Rollie was pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured deputy is receiving treatment and is expected to recover.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, as per DCSO protocol. This remains an active investigation, and Sheriff Potter has promised further updates as more information becomes available.
