Jacksonville Officer-Involved Shooting: Suspect Charged After Attempting to Strike Officer with Vehicle

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released details and video footage of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Gossett Street on February 11, 2025, involving 29-year-old Michael Youmans.

The incident is under preliminary investigation and details may change.

Background:

  • On January 30, 2025, Officer N. Hackley attempted to stop Youmans for dark window tint and broken tag lights. Youmans fled the scene before officers could make contact.
  • On February 11, 2025, officers located Youmans’s vehicle and planned to arrest him for fleeing.

Incident Details:

  • Youmans backed his car into a driveway. Sergeant B. McEwan parked his patrol car in front of Youmans’s vehicle, exited, and ordered Youmans to show his hands.
  • Youmans reversed his vehicle and then drove toward Sergeant McEwan.
  • Sergeant McEwan fired his JSO-authorized handgun.
  • Youmans’s vehicle continued forward, striking a fence.
  • Youmans exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Charges:

Youmans was arrested on the following charges:

  • Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer (related to the January 30th incident)
  • Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Trafficking in MDMA
  • Possession of Cocaine
  • Possession of less than 20 grams of Marijuana

Investigation:

  • The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the legality of the officer’s actions.
  • JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure compliance with policies.
  • A Response to Resistance Board will convene, and findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review.
